90s Talk Show – Sex & Relationships

The daytime TV classics that made “Geraldo” a household name defined 1990s tabloid talk and, for better and worse,
became the era’s pop-cultural shorthand. Anchored by “Torn Between Two Lovers”, here we span open marriages, the Shere Hite sex survey, a woman who claims 2,000 partners, jealousy and home-birth episodes.

Welcome to nostalgia gold for for those of us grew up watching it, and don’t miss a show. Playlists are updated regularly!

Two pairs of identical sisters who stopped speaking. Twin brothers in a paternity fight. Twin brothers who came to this stage as women. April 30th, 1993.

April 30, 1993 — the full 43-minute episode of the Geraldo Rivera Show.

"Imagine living your life as a double," Geraldo opens. "I am surrounded by a sea of doubleness." What follows is four sets of identical twins, and one question none of them answers the same way: how much of who you are is actually yours?

REGINA AND VIRGINIA — identical twins who can't even agree on how long they've been estranged. Regina says three years. Virginia says six. "I feel sorry for her," each says about the other. Their father didn't call them by name until they were 21. When Geraldo pushes for a reconciliation live on air, it doesn't happen.

CHANEL AND GABRIELLE — identical twins who were born twin brothers. They say they knew by the age of five or six, began dressing as women at 14, and discuss the birth names they left behind and the operations still ahead of them.

RALPH, ROSS AND HARMONY — identical twins in a paternity case. Ralph is the man the court names as the father of 16-year-old Harmony, says he had no choice in the matter, and has been jailed over unpaid support. His twin Ross says he slept with Harmony's mother too. Harmony, face to face with the man the court calls her father: "In my heart, you are the biggest scum on earth."

NINA AND PAULA — identical twins, one gay and one straight. Nina came out to her sister at 29. Paula says she already knew.

Then psychologist Dr. Jane Greer, author of Adult Sibling Rivalry: Understanding the Legacy of Childhood, gives a name to the pattern running through every family on that stage — "twin-dividuality," the struggle to build a separate identity while sharing a face, and what she calls the "cold war" between twins who can't say the word anger out loud.

A raw 90s daytime talk time capsule — family, identity, rage, and the reconciliations that never quite arrive.

What happens when the fax machine and the home computer enter the dating world? 1989 finds out, looking foward to "sex in the 1990s."

Geraldo brings together two sides of early tech culture. On one side: Chuck Farnham, creator of the adult computer program "Smutstack," debating Paige Mellish of Feminists Fighting Pornography and psychologist Dr. Peter Wish over interactivity, age verification, bulletin-board shareware, and whether adult software is harmless fantasy or escalation. On the other side: self-described "fax king" Paul Hollendorf, who says he received 8,000 faxes and throws fax parties, and Barry Kachalowicz, founder of the "Singles Facts" fax dating service - plus Aggie & Jeff, a couple who actually met through his service.

Closing the hour, Omni Magazine editor and futurologist Patty Adcroft offers the history of the internet view: infertility science, blurring gender roles, "serial marriages" across longer lives, and - with AIDS reshaping behavior - non-contact dating as a form of safe sex.

A pure 90s nostalgia time capsule for fans of 64 90s daytime talk, pre-internet dating, and how America first argued about computers and intimacy.
