1990. Chief of Detectives shares his story, took a life while off duty

April 23rd, 1990. Geraldo Rivera’s namesake talk show hears from a man who interrupted a bank robbery with the robber ending up dead.

“I can remember when Lars was sworn in…the chief said, in time, all your friends will be policemen….I didn’t understand at the time…”

We hear from Captain Lars Sederling about the stress detectives face before he shares his story about a close encounter at the bank. While off duty and with his young daughter, an armed man tried to rob the bank while firing shots. He ends up shot by Mr. Sederling, who goes on to describe the guilt of taking a human life. Betty his wife describes the effects on their family as they went through this particular form of PTSD in the days and months following the shooting.

The high tension and difficult job law enforcement officers undertake continue to take a heavy toll in their personal lives.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
