June 2nd, 1997. Geraldo Rivera’s namesake talk show hosts Carl and and Christopher Veltmann, husband and son of the deceased.
“Didn’t she carry on an affair with a former employer of yours, didn’t she extort hundreds of thousands of dollars from him…”
We hear more of the details of this case, in what looks like a motive being established. While the husband and son duo admit she was taking mass sums of money from another man, they claim it was unrelated. On the night she was found dead, Carl was allegedly headed out for a hunting trip, although it is possible inconsistencies in the story exist.
We hear form James Curtis a district attorney, who admits that statistically in cases such as this the person who gets killed knows the person who killed them. Carl claims he is a free man today because the appellate court ‘saw through all this’, maintaining her death was clearly a suicide.
Elizabeth Veltmann died during a fire in her home. Contradictory evidence was later introduced including a suicide note and testimony from a former lover, with Chris and Carl Veltmann freed on appeal after serving five years.
This day, Geraldo’s television history.
