May 5th, 1994. Geraldo Rivera’s namesake talk show introduces us to Paula and Steve, a relationship that has lasted through gender identity changes.

After an introduction into the realities of Paula and Steve’s relationship, we learn that Steve used to be Carolyn and has a son Sam. Sam has not seen his mother in 8 years, since before the identity change to become known as Steve. Sam is embarrassed but promises to try and have a conversation with his parent after the show.
We learn over the course of this segment that Carolyn had high testosterone throughout youth despite being born female, and was shaving a beard as a teenager in high school.
While trans-sexual behavior and identity changes are more common in 2026, authentic ‘hermaphrodite’ individuals remain a rarity.
