1993. Olivia Riner, nanny accused of murder by arson, interview and Matt Taibbi analysis

February 10th, 1993. Geraldo Rivera on his namesake talk show sheds light on the tragic case of a three-month-old death and house fire in Thornwood, New York, for which no one sits in jail.

“It’s important to note that when the police and fire showed up that day..it was not one person, there were two people. Olivia Riner the nanny and John Gallagher who was also there…”

The gruesome and horrific details are reviewed in this case, beginning with the 911 call made by Ms. Riner. An interview with Olivia is shown where she maintains her innocence. As the segment continues we learn more about John Gallagher, a man dating the adult half-sister of the deceased. Mr. Taibbi claims he was never treated as a suspect.

An additional factor in the widespread interest in it’s case is the almost simultaneous movie release of ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’, about a conniving and murderous nanny.

Three month old Kristie Fischer died in a house fire December of 1991, and Olivia Riner was found not guilty at trial. No further criminal charges were filed.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
