July 7th, 1992. Geraldo Rviera on his Now It Can Be Told news program looks at the little known issue of irradiated foods, a process which uses radiation to kill microbes and bacteria.
“The final experiments with this technology, will be conducted on our dinner tables. That’s outrageous.”
This segment talks to industry officials, company representatives, and researchers about whether this technology is truly safe. We visit the Vindicator plant in Florida, first in the country to treat food with gamma rays. Owner Sam Whitney walks through the plant and describes the process which he says can prevent spoilage and help prevent contamination, including infections like salmonella.
In 2025, irradiated foods continue to be sold in the United States although they are not prevalent. Packaging is marked with a certain label and includes the word ‘irradiated’.
This day, Geraldo’s show history.
