1992. A man mauled by a bear, survives and keeps relationship

May 21st, 1992. Geraldo Rivera’s namesake talk show brings us Malcolm and Barb Aspeslet, victims of a grizzly bear.

“The day before we saw the mother grizzly and her two cubs on the way up to the top….and believe it was the same one we encountered on the way down, the following day…”

Mr. Aspeslet lays the groundwork for this near-death encounter, a couple’s hiking trip and getting to know each other for the first time. An encounter with the grizzly bear leaves them undeterred and the hike continues. Malcolm and Barb walk through again the next day, and this encounter is not benign, with him almost scalped in a scene so gory one of the rangers sent for rescue is sick.

Barb continues the segment reminding us it’s not the looks, but what’s inside that matters, before Malcolm closes this clip showing the medal he was presented from Queen Elizabeth.

Malcolm and Barb Aspeslet encountered the grizzly and survived in Glacier National Park, British Columbia, 1971.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
