1990. U.S. soldiers in the middle east connect with families in studio, can’t make it for Christmas

December 24th, 1990. Geraldo Rivera pays tribute to America’s men and women in uniform with this complete talk show episode, A GI Christmas in the Persian Gulf.

“…estimate that there are more American women over there, than there are men from any of our European allies. And an extraordinary number…are moms with husbands, and children back home…”

The program begins in Saudi Arabia where nearly half a million Americans are stationed due to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. In over 130 different countries the Geraldo show can be watched as New York City’s studio is filled with families saying hello to their members overseas, those who will not be home for Christmas.

In 1990, Iraq sent hundreds of thousands of troops into Kuwait. Nations of the world watched nervously as the U.N. passed Resolution 678, requiring Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait by January 15th. The American Operation Desert Storm was announced on January 17th.
