1990. Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew and the sheriff who arrested him

“…is the producer of the first record ever to be found legally obscene, by a federal judge.”

June 5th, 1990. This episode of the Geraldo Rivera show, we have an incident where sheriff Nick Navarro arrested the 2 Live Crew band after they performed their ‘legally obscene’ record live in Florida — he also arrested a record store owner selling the music.

Later in the segment we hear from Kool Moe Dee.”…rap is the product of an environment and the fact that they can sell 1.5million records or 2.5million records that lets you know …”

In Broward County Florida under Sheriff Navarro sale of the album ‘As Nasty As They Wanna be” was prohibited. Following court decisions soon after, the album was declared protected by the 1st amendment and not legally obscene. Sheriff Navarro was ordered to allow sales to continue.

This day Geraldo’s show history.
