1984. Wild Seals, a nuisance or precious life? Geraldo and Hugh Downes investigate

September 6th, 1984. Hugh Downs introduces this segment ‘Saving the Wild Seal’, before joining Geraldo near the island of Catalina just across from Los Angeles. Dolphins swim near the boat as the segment begins.

“Some species that were once reduced to a single family unit, now number in the tens of thousands…”

Diving and exploring the wildlife, we learn about the seal population explosion. Fisherman describe what they consider a nuisance. Geraldo and Hugh tour the California Marine Mammal Center and see the work done in saving stranded marine mammals.

Introduced later is Dr. Robert Riseborough at the Bodega Bay Institute, who speaks to the issues pollution causes.

The Marine Mammal Center in California and Bodega Marine Laboratory are still active in 2025.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
