“People Express decided they wanted to go after the ‘sofa trade’. In other words, the people who stay at home sitting on the sofa because it’s too expensive to fly…”
May 31st, 1984. 20/20 news correspondent John Stossel reports on the phenomenon of People Express, a budget airline. After almost 40 years of no new small companies in the market, deregulation has helped this airline gain share and in some cases make it cheaper to fly than riding a bus.
This nostalgic footage includes airline advertisements, interviews with the employees who are also part owners, and lots more about the company and industry. A look back at a time when airline ticket prices were much more friendly.
People Express merged with Continental Airlines in 1987.
