1984. Fascination with whales, is it because they’re huge? Whale watching explored

April 26th, 1984. Geraldo Rivera goes to the north coast of the Dominican Repbulic, to board a three masted schooner for whale research.

“Once an associate dean of the Harvard Medical School, Dr. Nichols gave up academic life to devote himself to the sea, and the study of whales…”

Geraldo’s journey on board the Regina Maris is recounted, as he hopes to swim with the whales. The scientists on board also hope to further research and we hear facts and history of human-whale interaction. As the weather improves we see some of the first footage of whales in the water and underwater shots, including the unexpected event of the whales investigating the journalist. This segment closes with details of the research being conducted and further goals of the expedition.

The Regina Maris eventually sank in 2003 while at dock, though parts of the shipped were preserved and set for public display.
