1983. The Last Waltz, America’s Cup sailing race, the lore and society

September 1st, 1983. Geraldo Rivera reporting for 20/20 ABC news reports on the series of sailing races held off Newport, in Rhode Island Sound.

“…it seems that when challengers come over here, they seem to try to do things that aren’t within the rules…or whatever…”

At the time of this video an American vessel had always won the race. The Australian challengers would win this event in 1983.

The America’s Cup sailing competition is the oldest international competition still operating in any sport, since 1870. We learn the players behind the yacht clubs involved, the society that flourishes around the race, much more in intrigue — and maybe dirty deeds.

The most recent iteration of this event was in 2024, when the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won first prize.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
