1983. Behind the Scenes with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone, ‘Staying Alive’ and others

1983. Geraldo Rivera for ABC news 20/20 presents profiles of, interviews with John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone shortly before ‘Staying Alive’ was released. Mr. Travolta had agreed to do the film 6 years after his hit ‘Saturday Night Fever’, partly because his friend Sly Stallone was directing.

The clip begins hearing from John Travolta about a low point in his professional life, some box office bombs and how he managed to pull it together. We hear throughout from Sylvester about his camaraderie with John, and what it was like directing the first movie that he didn’t also star in.

“..It’s like Hollywood is founded on cloud. … it’s as though you’d be walking down the street one day, and you step on what looks like a solid piece of cement and you just disappear from view..”

This segment is a good insight into both actors and what it was like making the movie Staying Alive. We also see some of John Travolta’s workout routine, with Geraldo joining in.

Both John Travolta and Sylvester Stallone remain active and successful in 2025.
