1974. Censorship at ABC over marijuana and a history of the drug’s illegalization

1974. Geraldo Rivera on his Good Night America program gives us a status report on marijuana, and the laws around it.

“As late as 1931, only 22 of the states had laws against the sale and possession of marijuana…”

This segment begins with a personal anecdote of Geraldo’s, wherein he participated in a marijuana smoking experiment, but the tape was not allowed on the air. We continue to hear a brief history of the laws as well as a University of Virginia Law Review condemning the lack of research underpinning those laws.

In 2025 marijuana is legal in 24 states for recreational use and 40 states for medicinal use.

This day, Geraldo’s television history.
